My name is Kolya Lynne Smith, and I am the Sightseeing Sociologist. I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. The city is filled with such history and culture that it inspired my degree in sociology. I graduated summa cum laude and received a departmental award in sociology from Bunker Hill Community College in 2016. I am a natural born advocate for multiple causes. During my years at Bunker Hill Community College, I was the president and director of a medical advocacy nonprofit organization I founded, called Ehrick Garion's Act. In 2021, my advocacy shifted to housing. I created a supportive and empowering resource for people who experience bullying, harassment and/or retaliation by housing management, landlords and/or fellow tenants. In September and October, I testified (virtually) at the Massachusetts state house on three proposed legislation - S.900, H.1407 and S.1084.
After graduating from college, I wanted to start traveling. I'm also a photographer and wanted to use my sociology degree, so I blended them all together and I started Sightseeing Sociologist travel photography blog in April of 2017. After graduating from college, I wanted to start traveling. I'm also a photographer and wanted to use my sociology degree, so I blended them all together and I started Sightseeing Sociologist travel photography blog in April of 2017. My first trip was in May of 2017 to Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. My favorite part of the trip was touring a coal mine with a retired coal miner, in Beckley, West Virginia. I continued to blog about local events in Massachusetts. Then in February of 2021, I started an independent research project on the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) where I explored the area around every stop on the subway, commuter rail, and took every bus (sometimes getting off at multiple stops) and both ferries (Charlestown and Hingham/Hull). I finished in May of 2022. And again on September 14 with the East Boston Ferry, December 12, with the Green Line extension to Medford/Tufts, and January 23, 2023 with the Pawtucket Commuter Rail Station. 418 different stations/buses/ferries. A series of four travel guides on the MBTA - "Take Transit To Travel: MBTA" will be published soon. (Release date to be determined.)
My independent research project on the MBTA sparked a new career, as a travel consultant. I love planning unique and personalized itineraries (especially traveling on public transit) and helping travel/tourism companies and travel/tourism related city/state agencies find ways to improve.
